Gender Synthesis Zine

Zine based on a presentation I gave at Bidston Observatory Artistic Research Centre on 26 October 2023 at the SSTRAPP event ‘Sonic Disruptions’. How do we synthesize gender? How does sound synthesis relate to gender synthesis? Where is my virtual body? Why is everything about eggs? And…what happened? This is a record of a particular moment, and of ideas that emerged from my trans- experience and discussions with Amy Ireland that subsequently found their way into our book Cute Accelerationism. For fans of that book, it offers a lot of background info delivered in a very informal style. For those interested in gender, it is an attempt ‘to say something about gender which is not just my personal little story, but is also not a Big Theory of Gender that I am trying to impose upon others. The question for me is how to stay close to this body, while drawing from it some diagrams that might be reusable for others.’ For synthetic sound practitioners, it offers some ideas about how the two things may be related and how to approach ‘otherbodily’ modes of sound production.

Made in an edition of 100, the zine is 32 A6 pages printed in colour (12000 words plus diagrams!). Each zine is numbered by hand on a printed sticker (three flavours, yellow, pink, and blue) on a unique individual airbrushed 220gsm cartridge paper cover. No two copies are the same!
